Laptop won’t turn on

Fix a laptop that will not turn on, black screen, no charging light, power button not responding, battery problems, charger issues, and laptop turns on but screen stays black.

All fixes in this guide

Fix: Basic laptop power reset

A laptop can get stuck in a frozen sleep or power state. A power reset clears that state without opening the laptop.

Fix: Laptop has no charging light

No charging light usually means the laptop is not receiving power, the charger or cable is bad, the outlet is off, the USB-C port does not accept charging, or the laptop has a hardware power issue.

Fix: Laptop charging light is on but it won’t turn on

If the charging light appears but the laptop will not start, the laptop may be stuck in a power state, deeply discharged, connected to a problematic accessory, or failing during startup.

Fix: Laptop turns on but screen is black

A laptop that turns on with a black screen may have a display brightness issue, stuck sleep state, bad graphics output, failed internal screen, or external monitor mode problem.

Fix: Laptop shows logo then black screen

If the laptop shows a logo then goes black, it is usually powering on but failing during Windows startup, graphics driver loading, display mode switching, or disk startup.

Fix: Laptop turns on then off again

A laptop that turns on then immediately shuts off may have a deeply discharged battery, overheating protection, bad charger, memory issue, or internal hardware fault.

Fix: Laptop overheated and won’t turn on

A laptop may refuse to turn on after overheating until it cools down. Blocked vents, dust, heavy apps, bad fans, or thermal problems can cause this.

Fix: MacBook won’t turn on

A MacBook that will not turn on may be deeply discharged, stuck in a power state, using a weak charger, connected to a problematic accessory, or showing a black screen while actually running.

FAQ

Why won’t my laptop turn on?

The most common causes are a dead battery, bad charger, loose charging cable, frozen sleep state, overheating, failed display, or a hardware power problem.

What should I try first if my laptop will not turn on?

Plug it into a known-good charger and wall outlet, wait a few minutes, then hold the power button for 10–15 seconds and try turning it on again.

Can a laptop be on even if the screen is black?

Yes. If you hear fans, keyboard lights, startup sounds, or see power lights, the laptop may be on but the screen or display output is not working.

Should I keep pressing the power button?

No. Use one deliberate long press for 10–15 seconds to force a shutdown, then press once normally. Repeated pressing usually does not help.
